Help make the 2020 presidential election the first in which

the majority of citizens elect the President

and every vote in every state is equal!

FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH THE NATIONAL POPULAR VOTE (NPV)

CHECK YOUR STATE'S NPV STATUS

The National Popular Vote organization's "Status in States" page is an easy way to check the National Popular Vote bill's current (and past) fate in your state: http://www.nationalpopularvote.com/state-status

If you live in a state that already has enacted the bill into law, reach out to family and friends in states where the bill has not been as fortunate yet and ask for their support. Your own state can function as a role model and inspiration for what worked. Keep in mind that regardless of where we live we are all in this together because the nationwide Interstate Compact underlying the bill won’t take effect until the participating states reach a combined total of at least 270 electoral votes.

If you live in a state where the bill has not been successfully passed by its state legislature, consider the following suggestions to help make the National Popular Vote a reality in time for the 2020 presidential election:

ACTIVELY SUPPORT THE NPV

Tip #1:  Regardless of whether the National Popular Vote bill is currently legislatively active in your state or needs citizen encouragement to be introduced or moved along, ask your state's governor, legislative leaders, and other top officials to support the National Popular Vote bill—for example by using the National Popular Vote organization’s easy email system. After entering your zip code, you can choose from among several message templates by clicking on “SHOW ALTERNATE LETTERS” and, if needed, edit the text: http://www.nationalpopularvote.com/tell-your-legislators-support-national-popular-vote

After pressing the "SEND EMAILS" button, you will receive an email confirmation that lists the names of the state legislators and officials to whom your message was sent.

Since your message destination was custom-tailored to your zip code, the names shown under "YOUR LEGISLATORS" in the confirmation email are the state Senator(s) and Representative(s) for whom you are a CONSTITUENT, which means that you live in their legislative district and have direct voting power over their political careers. To further encourage these key politicians, please call and/or visit their state offices to personally ask them to support this historic piece of legislation.

BUT note that this will not necessarily reach the state-level Senate and House committee members who are the actual decision-makers determining the National Popular Vote bill's future in your state. See "Tip #2" below for details on this essential step.

Tip #2Call, email, and/or visit the state-level Senate and House COMMITTEE MEMBERS who are the decision-makers for the National Popular Vote bill. To do so, find out the names of the committees that will hold hearings on the bill; print out the district numbers, names, and contact information for each committee member; and BEFORE the scheduled hearings politely but assertively encourage the members to support the National Popular Vote.

While you are waiting for the hearings to begin (or in-between hearings), call, email, and/or visit additional state-level legislators, such as majority leaders, caucus chairs, and speakers, in support of the National Popular Vote bill.

Next, attend the Senate and House hearings as a state voter regardless of your constituent status. You will be able to express your support by standing up and raising your hand when the committee chair invites the audience to do so. In addition, be prepared to perhaps briefly speak on the bill's behalf when given the opportunity.
